Morocco is taking bold steps toward becoming a global leader in green energy by considering the transformation of Tan Tan port into a hub for green hydrogen exports. The announcement comes as part of the Moroccan port agency ANP’s strategy to capitalize on the country’s renewable energy potential. A tender for a feasibility study has been launched to evaluate the port’s readiness for this ambitious venture.

This initiative aligns with Morocco’s green hydrogen roadmap unveiled earlier this year, which earmarked 300,000 hectares for renewable energy projects. The country has already received 40 proposals from global and domestic players, highlighting its appeal as a hub for clean energy innovation.

The choice of Tan Tan is strategic, given its proximity to the Guelmin Oued Noun region, an area attracting major energy investments, including TotalEnergies’ collaboration with Eren on a 1GW green hydrogen project in Oued Chbika. During French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to Morocco, a preliminary land allocation contract for this landmark project was signed, underlining international interest in Morocco’s energy ambitions.

ANP envisions using the port not only for green hydrogen but also for exporting derivatives like green ammonia and e-methanol. These value-added products will position Morocco as a key supplier in global energy markets, addressing growing demand for sustainable energy. By transforming Tan Tan port into a green hydrogen export hub, Morocco is cementing its leadership in the global green energy transition, creating opportunities for economic growth and environmental sustainability.
