Revolutionizing Energy: GE Vernova Validates Hydrogen Turbine Innovation

GE Vernova, a global leader in combustion technology, has announced a groundbreaking achievement in the validation of its Dry Low NOx (DLN) hydrogen combustion system for B- and E-class gas turbines. This development represents a significant step forward in reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable energy solutions. Conducted at GE Vernova’s Global Technology Center in Greenville, South Carolina, the validation tests confirmed the successful operation of the DLN system using blends of natural gas and hydrogen, as well as 100% hydrogen, with NOx emissions below 25ppm. The company aims to make this innovative technology commercially available by 2026.


The DLN combustor introduces multiple technological improvements. Unlike existing systems, it eliminates the need for water or other diluents to manage emissions, providing a cleaner and more efficient solution. The new system enhances operational efficiency with a 4–7% improvement in combined cycle heat rate while also delivering reduced NOx emissions. Additionally, it offers increased reliability with extended maintenance intervals, ensuring a dependable power source for industrial operations.


GE Vernova’s research on micromixer-based fuel air pre-mixer technology, which began in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy in 2005, laid the foundation for this achievement. The micromixer technology has been integral to GE’s H-class gas turbine fleet for over seven years. The latest advancements, developed at the company’s Advanced Research Center in New York and its Global Technology Center in Greenville, focused on improving hydrogen capability and culminated in the successful testing of a full-size 6B DLN combustor prototype.


With a global installed base of approximately 2,800 B- and E-class turbines, GE Vernova is a leader in gas turbine fuel flexibility. Its existing turbines, many of which already operate on hydrogen-containing fuels, have collectively produced over 530 terawatt-hours of electricity across 8.5 million operating hours. The new DLN combustor technology enhances this legacy by offering higher efficiency and sustainability, further advancing the company’s commitment to decarbonization.
